City Guide
Woodley Park, Washington
D.C. Some people think city life is diverse and crowded by definition. But Woodley Park is a quiet little oasis in the northwest corridor of D.C. where you don’t have to deal with the crime, crowds, and noise of more urban neighborhoods.

Woodley Park is an upscale neighborhood where the population density is less than half of what it is in other city enclaves. Instead of sharing your streets with businesses and traffic, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery and stately homes. The neighborhood has all of the walkable conveniences you’d expect from living in the city. If you have kids, you’ll enjoy being within walking distance of some of the most elite public schools in the nation and top cultural attractions like the Smithsonian National Zoo. The neighborhood does see more daytime traffic because of the zoo, but the streets are usually peaceful by nightfall.

Elite is a good way to describe Woodley Park, since this neighborhood attracts the wealthy and well-educated. You’ll find many highly educated professionals here; in fact, it’s not uncommon to stand in line at Manhattan Market with Congressional staffers, doctors, lawyers, and top business executives.

Financial stability and good manners are the defining factors in determining who belongs here, even moreso than the type of lifestyle with which you identify. What matters most to the residents of Woodley Park are the shared values of refined tastes and career success. The neighborhood is clean, quiet and safe, but it comes with a price tag that can be pretty hefty.

The location of Woodley Park is so convenient that it’s easy to see the advantages of renting in this neighborhood over the suburbs. Although you can own a car here, the area was built for walking. Fortunately, the public transportation in D.C. is so functional and reliable that the metro can take you almost anywhere you want to go. All the arts and cultural activities you could want are within walking distance or at least a short train ride.

Connecticut Avenue is the main street in Woodley Park. Here is where you will find trendy boutiques like Tangerine and the Art Deco Uptown Theater, which only has one screen but has a very classy, old-timey vibe. Connecticut Avenue is also host to a growing number of condos and apartments. Single people and younger people are most likely to live in the apartments along Connecticut, while families retreat to the spacious homes on the surrounding tree-lined streets.

Woodley Park is not known for its nightlife, and the neighborhood likes it that way. You won’t hear dance clubs thumping until dawn or trip over drunk college students. But that definitely doesn’t mean that it’s boring to live here. You can still hear free live music and see movies at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre inside Rock Creek Park. Woodley Park is all about that museum life, too: Hillwood Museum and Gardens, the former home of Post cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, is a beautiful nearby attraction, as is the Stanford in Washington Art Gallery.

People in Woodley Park have a lot of great choices for dining out. Although Woodley Park is not known for its ethnic diversity, you might be convinced otherwise by the restaurant selections. The Lebanese Taverna is well-known for its tasty Lebanese food and gluten-free options. Mr.Chen’s Organic Chinese Cuisine is not only healthy and organic but it was also rated the “Best of D.C.” in 2015. There’s also more high-quality sushi than you can imagine, too, at both Tono Sushi and Umi Japanese Cuisine.

The vacancy rate in Woodley Park is much lower than average, so you may have to search for a while to find the right apartments for rent. Come to showings prepared with your paperwork so that you can put in an application on the spot. Many apartment buildings are dog-friendly so you won’t have to worry about bringing your furry friend. Rent is also more expensive here than in other neighborhoods, but being free from the usual headaches of urban living can be well worth any price.

If you’re an educated sophisticate who loves living close to all the arts and culture that a world-class city like D.C. has to offer, but still crave that genteel lifestyle among beautiful houses and lush green spaces, you’ll love Woodley Park.
