City Guide
Midtown, Atlanta
Midtown is one of Atlanta’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. It combines innovation and the modern with eco-friendliness to create an inspiring, interactive, yet sustainable environment. It is unique from other Atlanta neighborhoods in its new-urban feel and the strong attraction it holds as a center of arts and culture. Midtown truly stands out from the rest of the city, making it a perfect place to live or to visit.

In the South, the primary way of getting around is by driving, which often lowers the demand for public transportation. However, Midtown has an impressive public transportation system, with multiple trains, buses, and shuttles for getting places. And if you’re looking for a more body-powered way to get around, the neighborhood’s walkability and miles-long biking trails make it a totally feasible option.

This neighborhood has tons of living options, from condos, loft apartments, and multifamily residences in Midtown Core, to the gorgeous, historical homes of Ansley Park. It also houses Atlanta’s famous Piedmont Park, where the annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival is held every spring. One of Atlanta’s largest events of the year, this three-day festival covers all its bases, including music, food, and art, with some additional elements that make the festival unique: a mimosa 5k; international- eco- and kid-themed areas for learning and celebrating; and a “Family Friday” event to top it all off.

Midtown is a self-taxing improvement district, meaning that commercial property owners in this neighborhood pay an assessment to help fund the Midtown Alliance organization, the nonprofit group that takes charge of improving and updating the area. Midtown Alliance posts a monthly project update to keep residents apprised of project statuses. Past projects have included establishing the Midtown Blue, a 24/7, year-round police force for area safety; repairing sidewalks and lighting up the streets; installing street furniture (benches, bike racks, recycling bins, etc.); and enhancing community landscaping. As if all these projects aren’t enough, there is also an app and website that residents can use to report maintenance requests for public right-of-way areas in order to keep things running and in order.

Midtown prides itself on its sustainability and eco-friendliness; the “Midtown EcoDistrict” team has plenty of practices and plans in place to further help Midtown residents increase their environmental consciousness. From the Luminaries Program (awarding buildings all over the area that have made significant commitments to going green) to the Tree Well Adoption Program (adding more trees throughout the area and allowing residents to adopt them), the people of Midtown are really putting in a concerted effort to keep their community eco-friendly.

One of the area’s most popular streets is Midtown Mile, which offers numberless restaurants and shops. And there are always more popping up, keeping these dining and retail options new and exciting! However, Midtown is not just a place of culinary and material exploration; it boasts a wealth of arts and culture as well. With many venues, ranging from classic to one-of-a-kind, such as the High Museum of Art, Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA), or Center for Puppetry Arts, there are many opportunities for creative inspiration and artistic expression in Midtown. This inspiration and expression come together annually at the Atlanta Arts Festival every fall in Piedmont Park as well! The festival aims to involve the community in the art culture of the city, with food, entertainment, exhibits, art booths, etc., that invite everyone to participate beyond visiting the city’s year-round venues. With so many ways to get involved, the art vibe here is contagious!

“Midtown” is appropriately named…the majority of the neighborhood’s residents are in their mid-twenties to mid-thirties. And a good half of the area’s residents are young professionals, making Midtown an ideal place for those seeking out an exciting, vibrant lifestyle to balance out their career. Let Apartment List help you find the perfect home here!
