Mission San Francisco de Assis. Aren't you glad you're not using the full name for the neighborhood? The mouthful refers to what missionaries built here in 1783, which told the native Ohlones that they now belonged to the civilization known as the Spanish empire. (Most of the locals disappeared within a hundred years.) By the time of the Gold Rush, the lands comprising the mission became housing plots, retail establishments, and warehouses. The more common designation of Mission Dolores comes from the nearby creek, "Arroyo de los Dolores" or "Creek of Sorrows."
San Francisco's oldest neighborhood still consists primarily of the post-Indian population that inhabited the area
