City Guide
Old Fourth Ward, Atlanta
Old Fourth Ward (often abbreviated O4W) sits right next to Sweet Auburn, a historic district of Atlanta that houses many important historical treasures, such as the MLK Jr. National Historic Site and the original Atlanta Daily World Building (now repurposed for housing and retail). This proximity to such culturally significant sites is not lost on those who dwell in O4W; indeed, historical ties and events are frequently mentioned in reference to descriptions of the area and its character.

O4W is also known for steadily improving on behalf of its residents. The neighborhood houses the Historic Fourth Ward Park, with a kids’ splash pad and a pond that retains storm water, rendering it both family- and eco-friendly. Fourth Ward Skate Park is also here, which was built/created with input from the community’s skaters. Atlanta’s Central Park, also in the neighborhood, boasts an indoor recreational center in addition to basketball and tennis courts, a playground, walking paths, and more. The BeltLine, Atlanta’s old railroad that is being converted into a walking, biking, running pathway, also runs through this area, interconnecting it with other neighborhoods around the city.

The vibe in Old Fourth Ward is one of community and excitement. Though modern apartments, condos, townhomes, etc. are being developed in the neighborhood, there are also historic 1920’s style and Victorian homes here. The area values history and tradition while also bringing in the new and urban. A great example of this is Ponce City Market, which was developed in the building that used to serve as City Hall East. Similar to NYC’s Chelsea Market, PCM offers a variety of retail and dining options, as well as events, and is a newly popular destination within the neighborhood.

Another claim that Old Fourth Ward has to fame? Edgewood Avenue. An old street that has experienced various reputations over the years, it currently is known for hosting some of the best restaurants, bars, and hidden speakeasies in Atlanta, making it a popular destination for diverse nightlife. The Masquerade, an outdoor/indoor music venue established in 1990, is also a great spot for night entertainment. And after a night on the town, there’s no better pick-me-up the next day than a good, Southern brunch. There are widespread options for this in O4W, from the classic eggs benedict to biscuits and fried chicken smothered in gravy.

One of the biggest annual events in this area is the Old Fourth Ward Arts Festival, a two-day event that celebrates the arts as well as the O4W’s history. This festival features all kinds of artists working with various materials and highlights emerging artists, in addition to providing live entertainment, food, and interactive art activities for attendees. The Old Fourth Ward Fall Festival is also a popular two-day event, with a food truck rally, pet zone, complimentary bike valet, and more.

Old Fourth Ward is an area with rich layers of history, urbanization, and culture. It is an increasingly popular spot in Atlanta, and rightfully so: there are many entertainment, dining, shopping, and experiential options for everyone! No matter your lifestyle or life goals, Old Fourth Ward is a great way to go.
