National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released Portland’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.
"Portland renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "However, ratings varied greatly across different categories, indicating that even though renters love Portland, some aspects can be better."

Industrial transformation defines Pearl District, where Portland's former warehouse zone now showcases the city's most dramatic urban evolution. Former factories and storage facilities have become loft apartments with soaring ceilings and exposed architectural elements alongside newly constructed luxury buildings with extensive amenities. The walkable neighborhood features independent boutiques, art galleries, and exceptional dining options just steps from most buildings. The popularity comes with Portland's highest rental rates and weekend crowds that can overwhelm street parking. Particularly appealing to design enthusiasts, urban professionals, and empty nesters who prioritize walkable amenities and distinctive architecture over maximizing square footage or minimizing housing costs in this showcase of Portland urban living.
Historic character defines Portland's Nob Hill (officially Northwest District), where Victorian homes and brick apartments create distinctive urban character near the trendy 23rd Avenue shopping district. Residents enjoy exceptional walkable access to restaurants, boutiques and Forest Park's extensive trail system. Though parking challenges increase closer to commercial corridors, many residents forgo cars entirely due to the neighborhood's exceptional walkability and public transportation options. The area's architectural significance includes numerous historic landmarks, creating distinctive living spaces with character unavailable in newer construction despite premium pricing reflecting the neighborhood's desirability.
Creative energy defines Downtown Portland, where food cart pods surround Pioneer Courthouse Square and independent retailers thrive alongside Powell's City of Books. Homeless encampments near Burnside Bridge require vigilance after dark despite increased security patrols. Bike theft concerns necessitate investing in heavy-duty U-locks for Biketown shared cycles and personal rides alike. Converted warehouse lofts offer industrial-chic aesthetics with preserved loading docks and freight elevators, while newer construction frequently includes eco-friendly features like rainwater harvesting and solar arrays.
