    Pearl

What's it like to live in Pearl?

Industrial transformation defines Pearl District, where Portland's former warehouse zone now showcases the city's most dramatic urban evolution. Former factories and storage facilities have become loft apartments with soaring ceilings and exposed architectural elements alongside newly constructed luxury buildings with extensive amenities. The walkable neighborhood features independent boutiques, art galleries, and exceptional dining options just steps from most buildings. The popularity comes with Portland's highest rental rates and weekend crowds that can overwhelm street parking. Particularly appealing to design enthusiasts, urban professionals, and empty nesters who prioritize walkable amenities and distinctive architecture over maximizing square footage or minimizing housing costs in this showcase of Portland urban living.

    Nob Hill

What's it like to live in Nob Hill?

Historic character defines Portland's Nob Hill (officially Northwest District), where Victorian homes and brick apartments create distinctive urban character near the trendy 23rd Avenue shopping district. Residents enjoy exceptional walkable access to restaurants, boutiques and Forest Park's extensive trail system. Though parking challenges increase closer to commercial corridors, many residents forgo cars entirely due to the neighborhood's exceptional walkability and public transportation options. The area's architectural significance includes numerous historic landmarks, creating distinctive living spaces with character unavailable in newer construction despite premium pricing reflecting the neighborhood's desirability.

    Downtown Portland

What's it like to live in Downtown Portland?

Creative energy defines Downtown Portland, where food cart pods surround Pioneer Courthouse Square and independent retailers thrive alongside Powell's City of Books. Homeless encampments near Burnside Bridge require vigilance after dark despite increased security patrols. Bike theft concerns necessitate investing in heavy-duty U-locks for Biketown shared cycles and personal rides alike. Converted warehouse lofts offer industrial-chic aesthetics with preserved loading docks and freight elevators, while newer construction frequently includes eco-friendly features like rainwater harvesting and solar arrays.

Portland Renter Confidence Survey

National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states

Here’s how Portland ranks on:

Overview of Findings

Apartment List has released Portland’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.

"Portland renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "However, ratings varied greatly across different categories, indicating that even though renters love Portland, some aspects can be better."

Key Findings in Portland include the following:

  • Portland renters gave their city a B overall.
  • The highest-rated categories for Portland were pet-friendliness and public transit, which both received scores of A.
  • The areas of concern to Portland renters are affordability and commute time, which received D and C scores, respectively.
  • Portland millennials are moderately satisfied with their city, giving it an overall rating of B.
  • Portland did relatively well compared to other Pacific Northwest cities like Spokane (C+) and Tacoma (C+), but earned lower marks than Seattle (B+) and Beaverton (B+).
  • Portland did relatively poorly compared to similar cities nationwide, including Austin (A-), Nashville (A-) and Boston (A).
  • The top rated cities nationwide for renter satisfaction include Scottsdale, AZ, Irvine, CA, Boulder, CO and Ann Arbor, MI. The lowest rated cities include Tallahassee, FL, Stockton, CA, Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI and Newark, NJ.

Renters say:

  • "There are so many activities both in and outside of the city. Unfortunately, rent is skyrocketing and traffic is getting worse." -Nolan B.
  • "People love living in Portland, which makes it a happy, fun environment. However, people love it so much that it’s crowded and expensive, too." -Chelsea C.
  • "I love how green and vibrant everything is, especially in the summer. I also like the laid-back atmosphere." -Ashley M.
