You’ll find out that the “Minnesota Nice” attitude is more than just a stereotype as you wave at your neighbors. This is a place where people take pride in their surroundings, and the West Calhoun Neighborhood Council works hard to ensure the stability of the area. Causing a ruckus just isn’t done here: the crime rate is among the lowest in all of Minneapolis.
That assurance of safety means that you’ll see people enjoying the outdoors all year long. Joggers and bikers love the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway that has two lanes around Calhoun Lake and goes around the entire city. West Calhoun is a very dog-friendly neighborhood and you’ll see people walking their dogs along the Midtown Greenway or bringing their furry friends to the Tin Fish restaurant.
Most people in West Calhoun have a car and drive to work but choose to walk or bike around the community. Like most of Minneapolis, the neighborhood is very walkable and lots of people bike in any weather. West Calhoun doesn’t yet have a stop for Metro light rail, though the West Lake metro station is in the planning stages.

Minikahda Club is the oldest country club in Minneapolis. The club and golf course have gorgeous views of both Lake Calhoun and the Minneapolis skyline. This building dates back to 1898 and is a well-preserved piece of the city’s history. The Bakken Museum is in another classic building near the lake and has interesting educational tours.
Lake Calhoun is the centerpiece of the neighborhood and lends that beachside, resort atmosphere. You can go out on the water in a kayak or boat or let your dog swim in the lake. The health-conscious professionals in this neighborhood aren’t deterred by a little cold weather, so you’ll see plenty of people milling around the lake during most of the year.
West Calhoun residents want the best quality they can get, and they can afford to pay for it. You won’t see many discount stores or down-market fast food restaurants here. Burger Jones is a great example of the West Calhoun aesthetic, as a restaurant that serves a more gourmet burger than you’d find elsewhere. Rustica is a step above your ordinary coffee shop and bakery, serving unique treats like maple clove lattes and pistachio eclairs.
Almost all of the housing in West Calhoun is either an apartment or condo. There are very few single-family homes in the entire neighborhood, most of which are historic homes by the lake. This neighborhood proves that you don’t need a rambling home and a lawn to live in a safe, family-friendly environment. The newer apartment buildings are best described as “luxury”, with features ranging from onsite yoga classes to complimentary Starbucks machines in the lobby. You’ll pay for these privileges, of course, but they create an environment you’ll love to call home.
It might not be a quick or easy task to find an apartment for rent in West Calhoun, because a lot of people want to live here. Expect stiff competition for available apartments, and you’ll need proof that you’re a good tenant with a healthy bank account. Come prepared to lease on the spot—and don’t be surprised if you end up on a waiting list. Even though it can be challenging to snag an apartment for rent in West Calhoun, it will be worth the wait. Of course most buildings in such an overwhelmingly dog-friendly neighborhood welcome your pet, though you’ll likely have to pay extra deposits and rent.
West Calhoun provides the best amenities of city life and the safety and comfort of an upscale suburb. If your budget allows the finer things in life, you’ll be right at home in West Calhoun.
