Revival energy flows through Esther Short, where Vancouver's oldest neighborhood surrounds the Northwest's oldest public square, creating a walkable urban district without Portland's premium pricing just across the Columbia River. Recently developed mid-rise apartments complement historic buildings with ground-floor restaurants and shops creating genuine street life unusual for smaller Northwest cities. The neighborhood hosts popular events including a farmers market and summer concert series in the central park. Washington's sales tax structure affects shopping costs compared to Oregon, and bridge traffic can complicate Portland commutes during peak hours. Particularly appealing to those seeking urban amenities at more moderate costs who appreciate smaller-city scale while maintaining access to Portland's amenities without its housing prices or density.
Contemporary convenience defines Cascade Park, where Vancouver's eastern district offers newer housing with modern amenities surrounding the city's premier shopping destination. Most apartment communities include fitness centers, community spaces, and outdoor recreation areas reflecting current lifestyle preferences. Though requiring slightly longer Portland commutes than western Vancouver neighborhoods, many households find the trade-off worthwhile for significantly more living space, better school options, and newer construction at competitive rates compared to similar-quality Portland properties commanding premium pricing despite offering comparable square footage.
Landover/Sharmel offers affordable living with excellent highway access in central Vancouver. Rental properties typically include more square footage than similarly priced Portland options. The neighborhoods provide good access to both Mall 205 shopping and I-205 connections to Portland, creating convenient positioning for households seeking value with strategic highway positioning for Oregon commuting while benefiting from Washington's absence of state income tax.
