Overview of Findings
Apartment List has released Durham’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.
"Durham renters expressed general dissatisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "Some categories received above average scores, and many received average scores."
Key Findings in Durham include the following:
- Durham renters gave their city a C overall.
- The highest-rated categories for Durham were commute time and weather, which both scored A-.
- The areas of concern to Durham renters are safety and low crime (C) and quality of local schools (C+).
- Durham millennials are moderately satisfied with their city, giving it an overall rating of B.
- Durham did relatively poorly compared to nearby cities like Raleigh (A), Greensboro (A-) and Winston Salem (B).
- Durham earned similar scores compared to other cities nationwide, including Orlando (C), Birmingham (C) and Cincinnati (C+).
- The top rated cities nationwide for renter satisfaction include Scottsdale, AZ, Irvine, CA, Boulder, CO and Ann Arbor, MI. The lowest rated cities include Tallahassee, FL, Stockton, CA, Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI and Newark, NJ.

- "Durham is an up-and-coming city so there’s lots of fun things to do. It’s also progressive and welcoming to anyone. But the schools aren’t great, so I’m not sure I’d live here with a family." -Courtney J.
- "Crime is bad in some parts of town, but I love the downtown area and all the great year-round activities." -Jackie M.
