National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released Chicago’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.
"Chicago renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "However, ratings varied greatly across different categories, indicating that even though renters love Chicago, some aspects can be better."

The neighborhood's renaissance continues through artist-led initiatives transforming former manufacturing districts into vibrant communities with gallery spaces and performance venues. Many buildings feature soaring ceilings and freight elevators perfect for artists working with larger materials or installations. Though some areas show transitional character with block-by-block variation, the authentic Chicago experience contrasts with more homogenized neighborhoods, and excellent public transportation connections provide easy access to downtown cultural institutions and employment centers without parking challenges.
International diversity thrives across Chicago's Far North Side, where neighborhoods like Rogers Park and West Ridge showcase global influences through authentic restaurants, markets, and community institutions. Rental options include courtyard buildings, vintage walk-ups, and divided houses with more space than similarly priced properties closer to downtown. While the area offers excellent access to both Lake Michigan beaches and multiple transit options, commutes to Loop employment can take 45+ minutes despite good transportation connections. Particularly appealing to budget-conscious renters who value authentic diversity beyond marketing-created "international" atmospheres and appreciate genuine neighborhood character without corresponding rental premiums despite the distance from downtown attractions.
