  • Map of Far North Side

    Far North Side

What's it like to live in Far North Side?

International diversity thrives across Chicago's Far North Side, where neighborhoods like Rogers Park and West Ridge showcase global influences through authentic restaurants, markets, and community institutions. Rental options include courtyard buildings, vintage walk-ups, and divided houses with more space than similarly priced properties closer to downtown. While the area offers excellent access to both Lake Michigan beaches and multiple transit options, commutes to Loop employment can take 45+ minutes despite good transportation connections. Particularly appealing to budget-conscious renters who value authentic diversity beyond marketing-created "international" atmospheres and appreciate genuine neighborhood character without corresponding rental premiums despite the distance from downtown attractions.

    North Side

What's it like to live in North Side?

Chicago's diverse North Side encompasses everything from Wrigleyville's baseball energy to Lincoln Park's upscale shopping and Andersonville's Swedish heritage. Lake Michigan beaches and extensive park systems provide outdoor recreation throughout these neighborhoods, while historic theaters like the Riviera and Aragon Ballroom host national touring acts. Rental options range from vintage courtyard buildings with surprising architectural details to ultra-modern high-rises with lakefront views, creating opportunities across various price points and aesthetic preferences. Though winter parking challenges increase with snow accumulation, excellent public transportation including multiple L lines reduces car dependency compared to outlying neighborhoods. The area's density means competition for premier units moves quickly, requiring decisive action when ideal rentals become available in these desirable neighborhoods.

    West Side

What's it like to live in West Side?

Creative renters find inspiration in West Side Chicago, where industrial lofts and converted warehouses offer expansive space at significantly lower costs than downtown options. The neighborhood's renaissance continues through artist-led initiatives transforming former manufacturing districts into vibrant communities with gallery spaces and performance venues. Many buildings feature soaring ceilings and freight elevators perfect for artists working with larger materials or installations. Though some areas show transitional character with block-by-block variation, the authentic Chicago experience contrasts with more homogenized neighborhoods, and excellent public transportation connections provide easy access to downtown cultural institutions and employment centers without parking challenges.

Overview of Findings

Apartment List has released Chicago’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.

"Chicago renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "However, ratings varied greatly across different categories, indicating that even though renters love Chicago, some aspects can be better."

Key Findings in Chicago include the following:

  • Chicago renters gave their city a B- overall.
  • The highest-rated categories for Chicago were public transit and social life, which received grades of A+ and B+, respectively.
  • The areas of concern to Chicago renters are quality of local schools and state and local taxes, which both received F grades.
  • Chicago millennials are moderately satisfied with their city, giving it an overall rating of B-, while renters who are parents were less satisfied, giving it an F grade.
  • Chicago earned similar scores compared to other nearby cities like Milwaukee (B-) and Kansas City (B), but earned higher marks than Detroit (F) and Indianapolis (C+).
  • Chicago did relatively well compared to similar cities nationwide, including Los Angeles (C+), Columbus (C+) and Baltimore (C).
  • The top rated cities nationwide for renter satisfaction include Scottsdale, AZ, Irvine, CA, Boulder, CO and Ann Arbor, MI. The lowest rated cities include Tallahassee, FL, Stockton, CA, Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI and Newark, NJ.

Renters say:

  • "There’s always something to do and no need to drive anywhere. There are lots of great people and tons of jobs." -Matthew H.
  • "I love all of the beautiful scenery, food, and activities whether you’re single or have a family. But the taxes and cost of living is way too high here." -Angela O.
  • "Love the events, downtown area, parks, and nightlife, but I hate the crime." -Anon.
