National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released Saint Paul’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of 111 million American renters nationwide.
"Saint Paul renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "However, ratings varied greatly across different categories, indicating that even though renters love Saint Paul, some aspects can be better."

River bluff views define Highland, where St. Paul's southwestern neighborhood offers spectacular Mississippi River panoramas from its elevated position. The district centers around the walkable Highland Village commercial area with its independent businesses and practical amenities, while the extensive Mississippi River boulevard trail system provides scenic recreation directly from most locations. Though rental rates exceed St. Paul averages, the combination of exceptional natural beauty, walkable amenities unusual for residential neighborhoods at similar price points, and strategic positioning between both Minneapolis and St. Paul employment centers typically justifies the premium for households seeking balanced environments integrating urban convenience with natural surroundings increasingly difficult to achieve without substantial commuting compromises.
Converted warehouses near Rice Park offer skyline views and walkable access to Xcel Energy Center concerts. Homeless encampments cluster near Union Depot after dark.
Artistic energy fills Hamline Midway, where creatives rent affordable spaces in this evolving Saint Paul neighborhood. Apartments in converted historic buildings feature unexpected character details like exposed brick and hardwood floors. Though winter brings parking challenges during snow emergencies, the neighborhood's excellent public transportation includes the Green Line light rail connecting to both downtown cores. Renters enjoy the vibrant community surrounding Hamline University, with coffee shops hosting poetry readings and the iconic Midway Books providing endless browsing opportunities during Minnesota's cold months.
