“I don't think we should have to pay for parking. If we had a garage I could see why but just for a spot in the lot doesn't make sense. Plus we have to pay for the gym. I have lived in apartments most of my life and I never had to pay for the gym. It should be free. For 2 people we pay over $2000 for our home, $150 to park because I'm a senior I wanted to be closer to my home, then if we want to join the gym it's another $90. When our lease is up we probably will move. I already found a house down the street in UA for $1818. That's 3 bds, 2 baths, a garage, a nice yard, and it's completely renovated. If we join Planet Fitness it's only $50 for both and it's a great gym. Now that I know what's out there changing will be easy. I'm not the only one that is upset. I've spoken to a few people who agree with me. We love our home but all of the extra costs isn't worth it.”

Welcome to the Apartment List May 2026 Rent Report for Columbus, OH. Currently, the overall median rent in the city stands at $1,291, after rising 1.2% last month. Prices remain down 0.8% year-over-year. Read on to learn more about what’s been happening in the Columbus rental market and how it compares to trends throughout the nation as a whole.

Overview of Findings

Apartment List has released Columbus’ results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.

"Columbus renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "They gave most categories above-average scores."

Key Findings in Columbus include the following:

  • Columbus renters gave their city a C+ overall.
  • The highest-rated categories for Columbus were pet-friendliness and job and career opportunities, which both received A grades.
  • The biggest area of concern to Columbus renters is weather, which received a score of C.
  • Columbus millennials are moderately satisfied with their city, giving it an overall rating of C+.
  • Columbus earned similar scores compared to other Ohio cities like Cleveland (C) and Cincinnati (C+), but earned higher marks than Dayton (F).
  • Columbus did relatively poorly compared to similar cities nationwide, including Austin (A-), Phoenix (B-) and Chicago (B-).
  • The top rated cities nationwide for renter satisfaction include Scottsdale, AZ, Irvine, CA, Boulder, CO and Ann Arbor, MI. The lowest rated cities include Tallahassee, FL, Stockton, CA, Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI and Newark, NJ.
