National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released Honolulu’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.
"Honolulu renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "However, ratings varied greatly across different categories, indicating that even though renters love Honolulu, some aspects can be better."

Waikiki delivers quintessential Hawaiian urban beach living where high-rise condos and converted hotels offer direct access to world-famous shorelines with Diamond Head views. Renters enjoy exceptional walkability to international dining, shopping, and entertainment with genuine car-free living possibilities rare even in Honolulu's urban districts. Tourist crowds create year-round activity affecting quieter residential rhythms, but for those seeking maximum convenience with beach accessibility, this iconic neighborhood delivers unmatched positioning between Pacific waters and urban energy despite premium pricing reflecting the international destination status.
Urban transformation defines Ala Moana-Kakaako, where this central Honolulu district between downtown and Waikiki continues evolving with new luxury high-rises alongside established buildings. Apartments often feature panoramic ocean or mountain views with lanais maximizing Hawaii's indoor-outdoor lifestyle. The neighborhood surrounds both Ala Moana Center (Hawaii's premier shopping destination) and Ala Moana Beach Park, creating walking access to both urban amenities and beach recreation unusual even by Honolulu standards, though rental rates reflect the premium location.
University adjacency defines McCully-Moiliili, where housing options near University of Hawaii create diverse community beyond purely undergraduate environments. Rental properties include both modest walk-up apartments and small multi-family buildings with more generous space than Waikiki options at more accessible price points. The neighborhood provides ideal positioning between both academic resources and urban conveniences, with easy access to Ala Moana shopping and beach activities. Street parking challenges and occasional student-related noise are offset by central location, relative affordability (by Honolulu standards), and the vibrant energy that comes from diverse international influences throughout the district. Perfect for students, faculty, and professionals seeking authentic Honolulu living beyond tourist zones.
