National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released Santa Rosa's results from the first annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 18,000 renters, provides new insights into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.
"Santa Rosa renters are somewhat dissatisfied with the Sonoma County city, but show high confidence in the local economy," says Andrew Tam, Vice President of Data Science at Apartment List. "The US renter population is at its highest level in 20 years, and while Santa Rosa renters generally agree that the economy is on the right track, they did express concern about safety and local crime rates."
Key findings in Santa Rosa include the following:

Active adult community defines Oakmont Village, where Santa Rosa's eastern neighborhood offers resort-style living specifically designed for residents 55 and older. The district centers around two championship golf courses and multiple recreation centers providing extensive activities programming creating built-in social opportunities beyond typical residential experiences. Though age restrictions limit resident demographics, many find the combination of maintained landscapes, extensive amenities, and community programming creates distinctive living experiences increasingly sought after by active seniors seeking connection without maintenance responsibilities. The neighborhood's location provides perfect positioning between Sonoma wine country and Santa Rosa employment, creating ideal balance for semi-retired households maintaining professional connections.
Academic energy surrounds Junior College, where housing near Santa Rosa Junior College creates diverse community with educational focus. The neighborhood features walkable commercial districts along Mendocino Avenue, while nearby parks provide recreation opportunities within easy reach. Though student population creates some seasonal turnover, the genuine local character and central location offer substantial value compared to more tourist-oriented Sonoma County districts with their often inflated vacation-rental pricing.
