West Linn, Oregon was first called "Robin's Nest," then named Linn City -- after a Missouri Senator -- before becoming West Linn in 1913. Just across the Willamette River from the end of the Oregon Trail, the city has a storied pioneer past.

West Linn is bounded on its east and part of its south side by the Willamette River, the waterway that slices through the most populous part of the state on its journey north. Living near the water can be precarious, but having your own boat dock is so cool! The south part of the city is roughly shaped by Interstate 205, and the city of Lake Oswego to the north and west. It's part of the greater Portland metro area and is seen as one of the more upscale suburbs. The bluffs and hills hold properties with amazing views of the water and the Cascade Mountains beyond. From gorgeous Pacific Northwest summer days to misty winter mornings, the views are incredible.

Moving to West Linn

From the waterfront to the incredible view homes above, the property is hot, hot, hot! Begin looking for places to rent in West Linn as soon as you can. There are locations with premier apartments, but the vacancy rate tends to hover on the low side. Deposit requirements will usually include first and last month's rent along with a security amount. A downside can be the traffic -- with the river on the east and hills on the left, the north-sound run to Portland can be a downer at times -- just be prepared for a few extra minutes if you are commuting. Because of the geography, it helps to know where you will be driving to when looking for an apartment rental as well. For example, it can be a long way between bridges over the Willamette if you are crossing it each day!

West Linn Neighborhoods

Willamette: It's the part of town with the most new construction, fronting open space on the hills to the west. With easy freeway access and nearby shopping, it's popular with people working in other cities who like to come home to their own slice of suburbia.

Bolton: This is one of the original communities that was blended into West Linn when it was incorporated, Bolton has historic riverfront homes with immaculate landscaping. House rentals involve homes with history and flavor. Set along Highway 43 and the Willamette River, it also has a couple of nice parks and river access points.

Rosemont Summit: The top of the town, as it were -- situated almost in the middle of the city limits on the high hills above the riverside, it's not cheap -- but the views sure are great! Recently constructed premier apartments can be found.

So what's there to do in West Linn, you ask? It's as easy as checking the calendar on the city's website. If you're the active, sporty type, look out for Power Volleyball Open Gym every week at the Athey Creek Gymnasium. If that sounds too intense, regular volleyball takes place every Monday! For residents who love to read, Tales to Tails lets you read to dogs every Wednesday and Thursday at the West Linn Public Library. While you're there, ask about their other events like the Book Club, computer classes or the Music in the Stacks concerts. Who knows, you might bump into the NBA Golden State Warriors' point guard, Steve Blake since West Linn is his hometown!
