National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released Yonkers's results from the first annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 18,000 renters, provides new insights into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.
"Yonkers renters rank far below average for city satisfaction driven by low grades for safety and the economy," says Andrew Tam, Vice President of Data Science at Apartment List. "The US renter population is at its highest level in 20 years, and renters show particular sensitivity to safety when choosing a place to live, an area where Yonkers struggles."

Southeast Yonkers combines affordability with excellent transit connections to New York City in this diverse Westchester community. Rental options include apartments in smaller buildings and divided houses throughout various neighborhoods in this district. While the area provides excellent value compared to nearby New York City with straightforward transit access, property conditions vary significantly between blocks requiring local knowledge. Most suitable for commuters seeking value with Manhattan accessibility who don't require luxury amenities or consistent neighborhood character throughout the district.
Urban renaissance energizes Getty Square, where historic buildings from Yonkers' industrial era now house loft apartments with Hudson River views. Residents enjoy the walkable downtown featuring the Riverfront Library and weekend farmers market at the waterfront esplanade. Though Metro-North trains create occasional noise, they also provide convenient access to Manhattan just 30 minutes away. The neighborhood's affordability compared to New York City creates opportunities for first-time renters seeking urban amenities without Manhattan prices, while the area's diversity generates an authentic community atmosphere rather than artificial hipster enclaves.
Leafy streets and spacious homes characterize Bryn Mawr, where this upscale Yonkers neighborhood offers surprising value compared to similar Westchester communities. Many grand houses have been thoughtfully divided into generously-sized apartments with period details increasingly valued beyond purely contemporary aesthetics. For Manhattan commuters seeking space without extreme transit compromises, Bryn Mawr provides strategic access to both Metro-North stations and express bus routes creating multiple commuting options unusual for similarly suburban-feeling environments.
