In 1999, the Texas Legislature proclaimed the city of Lockhart to be the Barbecue Capital of Texas. It's estimated that around 5,000 people visit the four main barbecue restaurants located in Lockhart each week. In case you're wondering, this comes to a quarter of a million folks each year!
The city of Lockhart is located in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. The city represents the county seat of Caldwell County. The 2010 census estimated the population to be close to 13,000. Lockhart is not far from central Texas and is situated some 25 miles southeast of Austin, 74 miles northeast of San Antonio, and 158 miles west of Houston. The climate of Lockhart, TX, is described as being humid subtropical with summer highs in July reaching a rather sweltering 96 degrees, and winter lows in January of around 39 degrees.
