Intellectual energy defines Coolidge Corner, where this Brookline neighborhood borders both Boston University and the Longwood Medical Area. The walkable district features independent bookstores, cafes, and the historic Coolidge Corner Theatre creating vibrant street life. Rental options include apartments in brick buildings from the early 20th century with architectural character rarely found in newer construction, though popularity means competitive rental markets with premium rates.
College students beyond freshman year discover ideal housing in Cleveland Circle, where apartment buildings surrounding the Chestnut Hill Reservoir provide affordable options near Boston College and multiple MBTA connections. The neighborhood's commercial district includes practical amenities from late-night pizza to laundromats serving student lifestyles, while the reservoir's walking path provides recreation and studying breaks between academic obligations. Though some buildings show their age with older systems and limited amenities, the trade-off comes in significantly more reasonable rental rates than downtown Boston or Cambridge alternatives. The area's excellent public transportation includes multiple Green Line branches and bus routes connecting to broader Boston destinations without vehicle requirements. Summer subletting opportunities create flexible options for academic schedules, though finding September leases requires advance planning given the neighborhood's popularity among students from multiple institutions.
Washington Square combines urban accessibility with village charm along Beacon Street in this distinctive Brookline neighborhood. Rental options include apartments in classic brick buildings and divided historic homes with architectural details unavailable in newer construction. While the popularity means premium rental rates and parking can be challenging without a dedicated space, residents enjoy exceptional access to both downtown Boston via the Green Line and the neighborhood's walkable commercial district with sophisticated urban living beyond Boston's city limits.
