National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released results for the Bronx from the second annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 30,000 renters, provides insight into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.
“Bronx renters expressed high dissatisfaction with their city,” says Andrew Woo, Director of Data Science at Apartment List. “They gave below-average scores to most categories.”
Key findings in the Bronx include the following:
Perched at the Bronx's northwestern edge, Kingsbridge rewards renters with more affordable rates than neighboring Riverdale despite similar amenities. The community's rich Irish and Dominican heritage shines through in authentic restaurants and specialty shops along Broadway. Subway access via the 1 train provides direct Manhattan connectivity, while the nearby Jerome Park Reservoir offers unexpected outdoor recreation unusual for urban Bronx neighborhoods.
Leafy sophistication characterizes Riverdale, where pre-war apartment buildings and historic mansions create a distinctly non-urban atmosphere despite Bronx location. Residents enjoy the extensive Wave Hill public gardens and the neighborhood's significant green spaces unusual for New York City. Though Manhattan commutes require planning via express bus or subway, the trade-off comes in more square footage, architectural character, and greenery than possible in most city neighborhoods. Many buildings feature Art Deco details and unexpectedly spacious floor plans that have attracted notable residents throughout the neighborhood's distinguished history.
Parkchester features distinctive red brick buildings surrounding landscaped courtyards in this planned community originally built by Metropolitan Life Insurance. Rental apartments offer more space and amenities than similarly priced options elsewhere in the Bronx. The neighborhood includes integrated shopping within the development itself, plus excellent transit connections via the nearby 6 train providing direct Manhattan access.
