Located smack dab in the middle of the great state of Florida, Fort Meade has over 300 houses listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
It's pretty cool when you can hear about some obscure fact regarding the Civil War and follow it with, "Yes, I've heard of that place. I live there." Residents of Fort Meade can do just that. No one can doubt that Polk County played an important part in the Civil War, even if that part consisted of a pretty nasty defeat by Union forces. But hey, isn't it about time we put that all behind us? Fort Meade has a lot more to it than that.
Planning Your Move
We'd like to welcome you to the town, friend. It's warm and it's sunny and you have about 5,626 fellow residents to keep you company. The cost of living in Fort Meade clocks in at around 15% lower than the rest of Florida, friend, so there's that. The average rental rate is lower than the rest of the state; 23% lower, to be exact, so hooray for our team!
Floridian Sunshine in Fort Meade
As you may know, Florida is home to stucco-lovers. If it stands still and you can walk in and out of it, chances are it will be coated with stucco sooner or later. This is a good thing, of course. Stucco is great for insulation, and you'll need insulation. In summer, the heat will climb, on average, to about 82 degrees. Note: that's an average. That means that there are, and will be, temps higher than that. If you don't like air conditioning, you grow to like it. But that's what gives Floridian life so much character. It's what makes the state great. That, and orange juice. And who doesn't love orange juice?
Speaking of, there are quite a bit of food and drink establishments, most of which are situated along Route 35, which runs north to south through the town. The good thing about this is that you basically know where you are at any given time, and food and shopping are never far away. On the east side of town you have Monument Park, one and a half acres of historic land that was once the site of a brutal skirmish between soldiers stationed at the fort (that's right, there really was a Fort Meade) and Seminole Indians.
So if you're looking for sunny climes, friendly folks, a proud sense of history, and a cost of living that is actually do-able, Fort Meade is just the place for you.
