City Guide for Hattiesburg, MS

Centrally located in Southern Mississippi and romantically named for founder William Hardy’s wife (Surprise! Her name was Hattie), Hattiesburg, Mississippi is a town once known for lumber and railroads. These days, it has a reputation for being big on southern charm and featuring a truckload of inexpensive apartment rental options. But enough jibber-jabber, let’s find you one!

Formerly called the “Hub City” by residents of yesteryear (and yore), Hattiesburg has a lot to offer and many residents who gladly revel in these offerings. Totaling a little over 50,000, Hattiesburg’s residents are a diverse and friendly bunch. Why do these people flock to Hattiesburg, you ask? Well, it is a landscape full of pine trees, friendly neighborhoods, proximity to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and an easy-going-yet-full-of-activity-kinda-vibe may be why. It also doesn’t hurt that all of these things come with an attractive price tag.

The perfect blend of sophisticated southern city and college town (University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University), Hattiesburg features a combo of upscale, luxury apartment living, as well as some less expensive apartments, single family homes and what the locals here call “cottages.” There isn’t one end of town that’s recommended over the other. But if we’re basing this strictly on popularity, then it’s all about West Hattiesburg and the area a bit north of the city center. Overall, the median rental price in this city is $799 a month for your typical one-bedroom. But, to be honest, the best way to base where to live in Hattiesburg is to take a look at the price tag. For instance, north Hattiesburg (Rawls Springs Loop) rents tend to be a bit higher than those in West Hattiesburg (close to USM).

Quick comparison: In the north end, you can find a one bedroom apartment (about 750 square feet) for $790, complete with a bark park, clubhouse, pool, tanning bed, some paid utilities and so on. In West Hattiesburg, $705 will get you in the door of a slightly larger one-bedroom apartment (about 950 square feet) loaded with all the bells and whistles, such as tennis courts, pools, FREE cable/internet, and patios.

Deposits will run you between $200 and $350, depending on the complex/area. There are also move-in specials, all inclusive rental packages and discounts offered throughout the city (especially near campus). If you play your cards right, you could luck out and not pay a penny on a deposit. Traveling with a furry friend (No, we don’t mean your roommate)? No sweat. Many apartments around Hattiesburg welcome pets (some breed restrictions) and even offer pet parks on site.

Many cities say they have it all, but not all of them go by the nickname, “Hub City.” A charming southern town named for a charming southern woman (or so legend has it), Hattiesburg has art, sports, education and a quality lifestyle at a low cost. Good luck finding your new apartments in Hattiesburg, y’all. See more

What to keep in mind when looking for apartments with balconies in Hattiesburg, MS

Balconies are a coveted amenity for many renters looking for high-rise views and opportunities for fresh air. However, you should keep in mind that balconies often come with restrictions.

Before signing a lease, ask about how many people can be on the balcony at once. Also, ask about whether you’re allowed to store a bike or other items.

You’ll also want to know about any maintenance schedules. Using your balcony as storage could result in fines and intervention from your property management.

Keep in mind that not all balconies are created equally. You may discover the views of the parking area are less than optimal or reduce your overall privacy.

Balconies can also get messy with debris, foliage, dirt, and pollen depending on your location. Renters are typically responsible for any clean-up and basic balcony upkeep.

Regardless of the issues to keep in mind, balconies are usually a big win for Hattiesburg renters. Ask about apartments on higher floors for the best views.
