City Guide for Longview, WA

Welcome to Longview! Located at the junction of the Columbia and Cowlitz Rivers, this small Washington city has working class roots, many inexpensive apartments, and is quite close to the cultural mecca of Portland. So, let’s get started with your home hunt:

Outdoor recreation is king in Longview. The town is fairly bereft of shopping, dining, and nightlife attractions, so for big city amenities, you’ll have to commute the 50-or-so miles to Portland. However, Longview is the gateway to Mount Saint Helens, so both you and the local economy benefit from this proximity. Additionally, the City of Longview has several well-maintained parks with dog friendly hiking and biking trails, including the popular Lake Sacajawea Park.

The Cowlitz River separates Longview from Kelso. The city center and industrial park are both located along the Cowlitz. However, some luxury townhomes and condominiums have recently gone up along the riverfront. These buildings frequently have studio apartments and furnished apartments for rent, as well as tons of amenities, such as a gym, swimming pool, and clubhouse. Two bedroom apartments for rent in these buildings are fairly expensive, typically going for $1,300 - $1,700.

Outside of the new development in the city center, you’ll find most of the best housing in the northwest portion of town near the Coal Creek and Longview Heights communities. Here, there are many apartments for rent, as well as rental homes. The southwest portion of town also has some inexpensive apartments in, desirable neighborhoods, particularly in the area surrounding Lake Sacajawea. These neighborhoods tend to be quieter and more suburban in feel. Two bedroom rental properties here generally range from $500 - $700.

Pet friendly apartments will vary by owner and location. For instance, several of the new riverfront developments allow cats and small dogs, while rental homes in the northwest are less inclined to allow pets. It’s not impossible to secure a rental for you and your four-legged friend, just allow yourself plenty of time to find it.

Welcome to Longview! Enjoy all the outdoor recreation the city has to offer! See more

What to keep in mind when looking for apartments with hardwood floors in Longview, WA

Scoring an apartment with hardwood floors can be a big win for Longview renters. They`re typically a beautiful addition to your space. They’re also easier to clean and sweep, particularly if you have pets.

However, there are some downsides. Hardwood floors carry sounds. They can also make your apartment noisy for your roommates and downstairs neighbors.

Ask the landlord or property manager about the hardwood floors before signing a lease. Are they actually hardwood or a popular composite alternative? The latter is probably easier to clean and care for than the real thing.

It’s also important to ask about who’s responsible for any damage to the floors and what that entails. Your security deposit could take a hit from scratches, dents, and other damage.

Consider the type of climate you live in. Hardwood floors typically don’t fare well in damp climates full of moisture. Stains and buckling are common in hardwood floors after rain flooding or excessive moisture.

However, hardwood floors can be ideal for dry climates or sunny areas for renters who love the way they look.
