City Guide for James City, NC

Renamed in honor of Reverend Horace James, an Army chaplain who headed the Trent River Settlement in the 1860s, James City was the largest refuge in North Carolina for black men and women during the Civil War period.

James City is a census-designated place (CDP) as opposed to being recognized as an official city or town. Located in Craven County, the town boasted a population of 5,899 in the 2010 U.S. Census. It is located on the North Carolina coast, approximately halfway between Wilmington and Elizabeth City. Despite its name, James City is essentially a neighborhood of New Bern, to the point that many of the businesses within town use New Bern descriptors in their names, even when located in James City. The thin strip of land that makes up James City incorporates the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport to the north and is between Highway 70 to the west and the Neuse River to the east. See more

What to keep in mind when looking for dog friendly apartments in James City, NC

Finding an apartment in James City that accepts your pet may not be easy, but it’s very possible. Keep in mind, most of the time you’ll have to pay a premium for bringing your dog along in your new apartment. Some apartments require you to pay monthly pet rent, others will ask for a non-refundable pet fee or a refundable pet deposit.

While landlords and property management companies have varying pet policies, most of them limit the number of dogs you can bring to your apartment and include breed and weight restrictions.

If your pet falls under some of the restrictions outlined in the pet policy, it’s still worth asking the landlord if they can make an exception for your dog. Preparing a pet resume ahead of time could help you build the case for your furry friend. Make sure to include information on behavioral training your dog went through over the years and proof of vaccinations. If you can, include references from your former landlord and/or neighbors.
