Southgate offers suburban comfort with excellent transit connections in this established Milwaukie neighborhood. Rental homes typically feature more yard space and square footage than similarly priced options in Portland. While the area provides good access to both the MAX Orange Line to Portland and everyday shopping along King Road, some sections lack sidewalks despite otherwise family-friendly features. Well-suited for households seeking more space than Portland proper at more moderate rates who still want public transit options for downtown commuting.
Fed up with Portland prices but still want actual character in your living space? Historic Milwaukie delivers with its early 20th century homes and small apartment buildings from an era when construction quality mattered. The neighborhood's walkable downtown includes locally-owned restaurants, a weekend farmers market, and independent retailers that have largely disappeared from chain-dominated suburbs. Orange Line light rail provides downtown Portland access without driving stress, while the Willamette River waterfront offers peaceful escapes from urban pressure. Many rental homes feature unexpected architectural details – built-in buffets, leaded glass windows, and front porches that foster neighborhood connections beyond adjacent property lines. One significant advantage: Milwaukie maintains its own water system with significantly better quality and lower rates than Portland's increasingly expensive utilities.
