National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released Ann Arbor’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters nationwide, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the country’s 111 million renters.
"Ann Arbor renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "They gave most categories above average scores."

Old West Side Historic District showcases perfectly preserved 19th-century homes in this walkable neighborhood just west of downtown Ann Arbor. Rental options include divided historic houses and carriage homes with architectural details unavailable in newer construction. While the historic designation means stricter renovation rules and parking can be challenging without dedicated spaces, residents enjoy walking access to both downtown employment and Main Street dining with genuine architectural significance increasingly rare in rapidly developing college towns experiencing substantial new construction.
Academic energy permeates Lower Burns Park, where historic homes within walking distance to the University of Michigan attract professors and professionals. Residents enjoy proximity to The Arb (Nichols Arboretum) for nature walks and the neighborhood's tree-lined streets perfect for evening strolls. Though football Saturdays bring increased traffic and noise, the trade-off comes in access to world-class cultural events from visiting lecturers to performing arts. Many homes feature classic architecture with modern updates, creating living spaces that honor historical character while providing contemporary amenities.
Broadway offers riverside living just north of downtown Ann Arbor with excellent recreational access. Rental options include converted historic homes and newer developments along the Huron River. While primary shopping requires short drives to other neighborhoods and some areas experience seasonal flooding concerns, residents enjoy exceptional access to both riverside trails and downtown Ann Arbor with more natural surroundings than purely urban alternatives despite similar central positioning.
