Norton Township was founded in 1818 as an incorporation of several villages and communities. A few decades later, the grist and sawmills were built, which brought jobs, money, and building materials into town. You know how to mill grist, right? Unfortunately, the people of Norton wanted their own, separate local government, but it took more than a century to accomplish.
