Top neighborhoods in Staten Island

St. George
St. George
What it’s like to live in St. George
The secret's getting out about St. George, where historic homes with Manhattan views rent for what a studio would cost across the harbor. A surprising number of pre-war buildings offer details you'd pay millions for in Brooklyn – parquet floors, crown moldings, and foyers that actually deserve the name. The free Staten Island Ferry provides the most scenic commute in New York, with 24-hour service enabling actual nightlife without car dependency. Unlike most Staten Island neighborhoods, you can easily manage without a vehicle here, walking to restaurants, theaters, and the St. George Library with its stunning harbor views. One insider tip: apartments on the hill require more stair-climbing but reward with spectacular bridge and skyline panoramas.

What it’s like to live in New Springville
Shopping convenience defines New Springville, where Staten Island's retail hub surrounds the Mall and adjacent commercial strips. Rental options include garden apartment complexes and townhouse communities with more space than comparable Manhattan units at fraction of the cost. The neighborhood provides excellent access to both the Staten Island Expressway and the Staten Island Mall, making it popular with families seeking value with straightforward Manhattan access via express bus service.

Rosebank

What it’s like to live in Rosebank
Harbor views at accessible prices make Rosebank stand out among New York City neighborhoods. This eastern Staten Island community combines small-town character with surprising convenience – the Staten Island Ferry and Verrazzano Bridge provide Manhattan and Brooklyn connections, while local beaches offer summer recreation unusual within city limits. Housing ranges from apartments in divided historic homes to modest single-family rentals. Transportation requires planning with ferry schedules influencing daily routines, and winter ferry cancellations occasionally disrupt commutes. Especially appealing to those seeking a relaxed pace within city limits who don't require daily Manhattan access and appreciate maritime character at rent levels impossible to find in other harbor-view neighborhoods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Living in Staten Island, NY

"The news said that Staten Island is the 'Forgotten Borough' how can you forget over a half of million families. Shaolin Wu-Tang Worldwide..." - Tweet by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan

Locals may lament their home being referred to as "the forgotten borough," since the other four eat up a lot of attention, but Staten Island is definitely one of the "Fearsome Fivesome" of the great New York City. The island ranks as the third-largest borough in square mileage, but the smallest in population -- which is kind of mind-boggling, since it's home to about half a million people. But what's a borough, anyway? Basically, it's a city and a county at the same time. Several states have them but New York's version grew from a combination of the city and county governmental structures that were in place in the latter part of the 19th century. Staten Island lies in the southwest part of the city and is nearly surrounded by New Jersey, except for its northeast corner, which is linked to Brooklyn via the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Staten Island is also close to Newark Liberty International Airport and sits at the mouth of the Hudson River as it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. With water views and legendary dining and entertainment options readily accessible, you may wonder why haven't started your search for apartments in Staten Island yet.

Though the borough joined New York City as part of the consolidation of the area in 1898, the name has only been officially "Staten Island" since 1975
