If you are an aspiring writer, you might find inspiration in Valley Cottage, New York. Some notable authors who once called this little hamlet home include Sigrid de Lima, Anita Shreve, William Styron, Harvey Swados and Isaac Bonewits. Also, Leo Tolstoy's youngest daughter, Alexandra, once lived in this little town.
Valley Cottage is a hamlet of the town of Clarkstown in southwest New York. The population was just over 9,100 in 2010, and at just 4.3 square miles, Valley Cottage gives residents the chance to get to know their neighbors, but they'll also have some space to have some privacy in their everyday lives. During the American Revolution, this little hamlet was known as Storm's Corner, but in 1876, residents decided that it would be more aptly named Valley Cottage. There are two legends regarding the name; one is that it was named for the house nearest the railroad station, and the other is that it was named after a horse. Regardless, the quaint name of Valley Cottage has stuck, and its residents enjoy the charm of this small town to this day. View Valley Cottage City Guide
Balconies are a coveted amenity for many renters looking for high-rise views and opportunities for fresh air. However, you should keep in mind that balconies often come with restrictions.
Before signing a lease, ask about how many people can be on the balcony at once. Also, ask about whether you’re allowed to store a bike or other items.
You’ll also want to know about any maintenance schedules. Using your balcony as storage could result in fines and intervention from your property management.
Keep in mind that not all balconies are created equally. You may discover the views of the parking area are less than optimal or reduce your overall privacy.
Balconies can also get messy with debris, foliage, dirt, and pollen depending on your location. Renters are typically responsible for any clean-up and basic balcony upkeep.
Regardless of the issues to keep in mind, balconies are usually a big win for Valley Cottage renters. Ask about apartments on higher floors for the best views.
