    Southside Flats

What's it like to live in Southside Flats?

Vibrant urban energy defines Southside Flats, where this distinctive riverfront district combines historic industrial buildings with trendy restaurants and bars. Rental options include industrial-chic lofts and apartments in renovated buildings throughout this walkable area. While the neighborhood offers exceptional nightlife and dining options along East Carson Street, weekend crowds and noise can affect quality of life in some locations. Perfect for young professionals and urban enthusiasts who prioritize walkable entertainment options and authentic city character over quiet residential surroundings.

    Bloomfield

What's it like to live in Bloomfield?

Italian heritage defines Bloomfield, where Pittsburgh's "Little Italy" centers around Liberty Avenue's authentic restaurants and specialty shops beyond tourist expectations. The district features primarily modest row houses and small apartment buildings at significantly more reasonable rates than neighboring Shadyside or Lawrenceville despite similar access to major employers including UPMC facilities. Though weekend activity occasionally creates parking challenges along commercial corridors, most residential streets maintain relatively manageable vehicle accommodation compared to denser Pittsburgh neighborhoods. The area's excellent public transportation includes multiple bus routes connecting to broader Pittsburgh destinations, while the relatively central location provides reasonable access to both downtown employment and East End cultural attractions without excessive commutes in either direction.

    Shadyside

What's it like to live in Shadyside?

Medical residents choose Shadyside for good reason – the neighborhood sits walking distance to UPMC facilities while providing genuine separation from clinical environments after intense shifts. The area's vintage apartment buildings offer significantly more architectural character than sterile medical district housing, with details like leaded glass windows and decorative lobby details reflecting Pittsburgh's wealthy industrial past. Walnut Street's commercial district provides everything from coffee shops to pharmacies within walking distance, creating car-optional living rare in Pittsburgh's hilly topography. Unlike Oakland's undergraduate chaos, you'll find streets quiet enough for actual sleep between hospital rotations. Many buildings feature unexpected amenities like roof decks with downtown views, while the nearby Mellon Park offers green space perfect for mental health breaks between intense medical training experiences.

Pittsburgh Renter Confidence Survey

National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states

Here’s how Pittsburgh ranks on:

Overview of Findings

Apartment List has released Pittsburgh’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of 111 million American renters nationwide.

"Pittsburgh’s renters expressed general satisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "Interestingly, ratings for Pittsburgh vary widely across categories such as affordability and weather."

Key findings in Pittsburgh include the following:

  • Pittsburgh renters gave their city a B+ grade overall.
  • The highest-rated categories for Pittsburgh were commute time (A+), affordability (A) and public transit (A).
  • The areas of concern to Pittsburgh renters are weather (D) and quality of local schools (C).
  • Millennial renters are very satisfied with their city, giving it an overall rating of B+.
  • Pittsburgh did relatively well compared to other cities in Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia (C+) and Allentown (B-).
  • Pittsburgh earned similar scores to cities nationwide, including Denver, CO (B+), Seattle, WA (B+) and San Francisco, CA (B+).
  • The top rated cities nationwide for renter satisfaction include Scottsdale, AZ, Irvine, CA, Boulder, CO and Ann Arbor, MI. The lowest rated cities include Tallahassee, FL, Stockton, CA, Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI and Newark, NJ.

Renters say:

  • "I love how pretty my city is and how much there is to do. The people are friendly. But I dislike the traffic." – Chelsey W.
  • "I love that there are so many job opportunities. But I hate that a lot of places for rent aren’t very pet-friendly. It’s a pain to find a place that will accept my dogs." – Anon.
  • "I love the direction my city is taking by bringing downtown back to life. But it’s missing great shopping, which would attract even better restaurants and nightlife." – Ieshia H.
  • "There is something to do at any time of day so it’s easy to have fun or find an interesting hobby. Ethnic diversity could be improved, though." – Jarrod B.
