Seated on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Eastern Louisiana, the unincorporated area of Waggaman is named after George Augustus Waggaman, a U.S. Senator in the 1830s. With his wife Camille, he built a huge plantation called Avondale, which was eventually overtaken by the Mississippi River.
