Originally part of the massive land area controlled by John Sutter that stretched all the way down to what is now Sacramento to the south, the city of Marysville was founded on all of the promise of California's heady gold rush days. The town's history predates California's admission to the Union. The town takes its name from Mary Murphy Covillaud, wife of an early founding rancher and survivor of the fabled Donner Party.
