Raritan, New Jersey, is a busy borough located in Somerset County. Raritan became a fully independent borough in 1948, and she hasn't looked back since! As per the 2010 census, there are close to 7,000 residents living here, and the borough keeps growing. Located near to fabulous Bridgewater shopping and famous New York City attractions, Raritan is a perfect way point for people who are on the move.

Moving to Raritan

A month or two before you make your big move, be sure to begin your apartment search. Depending on which neighborhood in Raritan you prefer, the housing market may be tight. However, if you leave enough time to look, you will be golden.

Before you'll be ready to sign your lease, you have to save one month's rent and a security deposit, which is usually equal to a month's rent. You will also need proof that you can continue to pay for your new place -- this is usually where a letter from your employer, recent bank statements and even your credit history may come in handy. It's possible that once you're in Raritan, you'll find that your landlord is more lenient, but you should always come prepared!

Raritan Neighborhoods

The town covers approximately two square miles, but it offers loads of diversity based on the neighborhood you select. Raritan has areas that cater to residents that prefer to live somewhere urban and trendy, and people who prefer to relax in suburban bliss. Take your pick!

Borough Center: This neighborhood is located to the east of the borough and is urban in nature. You will find reasonably priced places to rent here, and several apartment complexes offer all utilities paid. Looking for one-bedroom apartments? Borough Center's the ticket! The buildings here are older and well established, and this part of Raritan is the most walkable.

Northern Raritan: This area is more suburban than many other parts of the borough, and it borders the Raritan Valley Country Club. You can find apartments and rental homes here, but the housing supply is tighter in Northern Raritan than it is in other parts of the borough.

Route 202: The area to the northwest of the Borough Center that runs along Route 202 is less densely populated that other parts of Raritan. This may be your best bet if you are looking for rental homes. However, you will need a car to get around if you choose to live here.

Southwest Raritan: This is a nice area to the west of the Borough Center that is bordered at the bottom by the Raritan River. Look here for premier apartments that were built or renovated recently. This location also features several parks, most notably Duke Island Park that calls attention to the beautiful waterfront.

Living in Raritan

It should go without saying, but there is plenty to do in Raritan! Visit Uncle Vinnie's if you're looking for a memorable night out; you'll experience what locals rave is the best seafood in the area -- the items on the raw bar come highly recommended. But be forewarned, weekend evenings get very busy here! Come prepared to wait for a table if you are a weekend diner.

If you're looking for something to do outdoors, visit Canal Street Park in late September. You will be sure to notice the town gearing up for the annual Raritan River Fest. This family-friendly event has all of the regular festival fare -- food, fun, music -- but also includes some notable extras. A rubber duck race is hosted each year, and it draws quite a crowd. Up to 5,000 rubber ducks are dropped from a giant duck egg that is suspended above the Delaware River Canal, and spectators watch to see which duck will take the gold! Finally, the festival boasts the area's finest canine fashion show, the Camp Bow Wow Doggie Fashion Show, to be exact. If you have a furry friend, don't miss this chance to strut your mutt!
