The more affordable cost of living in East Chicago allows you to access fancier amenities within your apartment complex. You can also acquire a rental in a motel-style building, which gives you greater privacy and lets you feel more "at home" than you'd normally expect.

Where to Live

When looking for a studio apartment rental, there is little you can do as far as choosing which neighborhood to live. Most of these units are in one of only a few areas within East Chicago's 16 square miles of land. The main places to consider renting around are:

  • Guthrie Street & Martin Luther King Boulevard: There are multiple East Chicago studio apartments that fall within this neighborhood. It puts you within walking distance of the city's beautiful waterfront and trails, as well as the local train yard. State Route 912 is also just moments away, keeping you in short driving distance of all that East Chicago has to offer.
  • Chicago Avenue East & West: There are a few apartment buildings spread out across the streets running off Chicago Avenue. On the east, you will be within walking distance of Saint Catherine Hospital, as well as Block Stadium and Washington Park. The west side features more shopping options and puts you closer to Interstate 90, making it ideal for motorists commuting to work in nearby neighborhoods.
  • 151st Street East & West: Here you will find East Chicago studio apartments available from time to time. Living here puts Kosciuszko Park just footsteps away. This makes for better living, as you will have immediate access to a community swimming pool, baseball fields, basketball and volleyball courts, walking and sitting areas, and much more.

Living in East Chicago

The East Chicago lifestyle isn't for everyone. Those that are the happiest here are typically self-employed or work in nearby towns. However, locals can live a complacent life with no worries -- given the much more affordable cost of rent and how easy it is to find a new home.

After moving into your East Chicago studio apartment, here are some things you might want to do around the city:

  • Take a shot at the Ameristar Casino, where you can also stay the night at their hotel and enjoy the waterfront view of the East Chicago shoreline.
  • Look around the Marktown Historic District, a place known for being architecturally designed by an industrially named "Clayton Mark" back in 1917.
  • Head out to Wolf Lake Memorial Park, where you can enjoy everything from boating and kayaking to fishing, windsurfing and much more.
  • Try out one of the many highly rated restaurants in the area, including Bugatti's Steak & Pasta, Heritage Buffet and Stadium Sports Bar & Grill.
