Brook Highland is all of a whopping 2.9 square miles on the map, making it about the size of Mayberry of television fame. If that wasn't enough, most of the residents would make Andy, Barney and Aunt Bea proud: they fish, attend town festivals, sit on the porch and gossip about the neighbors, and spend time enjoying the sights and sounds of their sister city, Birmingham. Once called Lake Purdy, Brook Highland has it all. Well, except Lake Purdy. The real Lake Purdy is a manmade reservoir disguised as a lake.

Move It!

It's all here -- pet friendly apartments, rental houses, studio apartments, and townhouses. You must settle on the rental place at least 30 days in advance. Landlords here don't hold empty units but do need time to prepare units for the next tenants. Since the community is near Highway 280 and Interstate 459, there's no problem finding a mover willing to haul your stufferprecious possessions. It should not cost you any more than a normal move would cost because of the area's easy accessibility. Do have decent credit when ready to rent because there will be a credit check. You also want to have money in the bank because you'll need to pay an application fee, the first month's rent, a security deposit, and if Garfield or Odie are moving in too, a pet deposit.

One Big Neighborhood

This is a one-neighborhood wonder. Brook Highland may have a Mayberry atmosphere, but it has big ideas about houses and apartments looking sophisticated. Many of the places to live in Brook Highland are newer, and most houses have three or more bedrooms. This is actually a situation where the reservoir was originally in a remote area, and people showed up to build roads, houses and apartments. Brook Highland Drive forms a big circle in the middle of the unincorporated community, and inside the circle are plenty of property rentals. More rentals are found to the west towards the Little Cahaba River and south to Highway 280.

There are many established rentals and lots of recently built ones, too. People in Brook Highland don't want to actually live in the big city of Birmingham; they just want to be close to it. To be close to the bass, try an apartment search in the north end of the neighborhood because that's where the lake sparkles.

Living the Good Life!

Brook Highland is basically one big neighborhood, but it's close to some great shopping like the Summit mall. The high life for local sportspeople is getting fishy hands from stringing crappie after a day of fishing on Lake Purdy. Oak Mountain State Park is only 14 miles from Lake Purdy and has two lakes stocked with fish.

Actually, Oak Mountain State Park also has concerts, a golf course, horseback riding, bike trails, swimming, and tons of events. A big metropolitan area surrounds Brook Highland on two sides. Get on Highway 280 and go west, and you'll soon pass Mountain Brook to the north. Keep going and eventually reach Homewood to pick up Highway 31, which heads directly to downtown Birmingham. The Greystone Golf & Country Club is on the eastern edge of Brook Highland, but you'll need to get rid of the fishy smell on your hands before showing up.if you fish, that is.
