Overview
The city of San Elizario offers a self-guided walking tour of the San Elizario Historic District. This tour highlights no less than 17 historic sites that formed one of Texas' oldest villages. The San Elizario Presidio, the Adobe Horseshoe Theatre and the Old County Jail are included in the tour, just to name a few spots. The Old Cemetery is also on the tour, but watch out for ghosts...some of those graves date back over three centuries!

Located about 15 miles southeast of El Paso, the city of San Elizario has grown from a population of 1,500 in 1890 to 13,603 as of 2013. San Elizario has been settled since the mid 1500s, first by Don Juan de Onate, when it was still a territory of Spain. Next, after the Mexican War of Independence was won in 1821, the town became part of the state of Chihuahua. Finally, in 1848 after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, Mexico recognized the annexation of Texas and San Elizario was finally brought into the fold with the rest of Texas. This very old, but very resilient town incorporated on November 18, 2013, finally becoming one of the newest cities in the state of Texas!
Moving to San Elizario
No matter what time of year it is, San Elizario will welcome you with open arms and a wonderful array of properties to choose from. Give yourself 2-4 weeks of search-and-find time before you actually have to make the physical move, just in case you run into any personal snags. Be sure to have your identification, personal and employment references, as well as money set aside for application fees and deposits. Another helpful tip you should keep in mind is about the temperature. During the summer months, June September, the temperature can easily climb into the high 90's and occasionally top 100 degrees. If you are moving yourself and intend to haul your boxes and furniture with the help of friends, stay hydrated and try to avoid the mid-day sun!
San Elizario's Neighborhoods
This charming little city has three distinct neighborhoods to choose from. Each neighborhood has a slightly different tone and feel, so we have given a little information below, to help discern one from the next. Whether you prefer a rural setting or one that is smack-dab in the heart of the city, San Elizario has something for everyone!
Morning Glory: If you want to rent a one- or two-bedroom apartment in San Elizario, the San Elizario Palms Apartments on Socorro Road are an excellent choice. Alejandra Flores Park is a short five minute walk from the San Elizario Palms and is beautifully shaded, making it a perfect place to go for a morning jog or brisk walk. If you prefer, there are also rental homes available in this neighborhood, but you may need to ask a local realtor to help you with your search.
Town Center: If finding an apartment rental that is a modern build and filled with shiny new appliances is important to you, then this is the neighborhood where you should begin your search. Artists and those who appreciate art will really appreciate this 'hood. A quick drive down Main Street will take you past Art Studio 33, Al Borrego Gallery and Studio and the Golden Eagle Gallery, to name just a few.
Campo Bello Drive / Borrego Road: This appealing suburban neighborhood is extremely popular with people who enjoy living close to the the center of the city and favor a more pedestrian lifestyle. The city blocks are small and easily walkable, although most prefer the air-conditioning of their automobiles in the heat of summer. During the cooler months (November-February) you will see a large portion of residents biking or walking to where they need to go, just because it feels good! Finding a rental apartment in this neighborhood is a relatively easy process, just give yourself a two or three week head start so that you have time to find exactly what you require. This area features small-to-medium-size homes and apartments, usually in the studio to three and four-bedroom range. Month-to-month apartment rentals are also an option in this neighborhood if you need more time to find exactly what you want.
Living in San Elizario
Life in San Elizario is anything but dull! With the famous Rio Grande River running the southern length of it's borders, and at an elevation of 3,642 feet above sea level, this ruggedly beautiful area of Texas offers fun options for all of it's residents. The San Elizario Arts District is where you will find many locals. This is the strip along Main Street where many of the art galleries are located. A First Friday Art Walk is held on the first Friday of every month and as well, the city also touts a monthly Ghost Tour! There is always something happening in the Historic District, so if you find yourself sitting on the couch with nothing to do, head downtown and you won't be disappointed! A popular bar to meet up with friends after a long work week is Amigos Bar on Camino de la Rosa Rd., the beer is frosty cold and the service is always excellent. If you feel like heading elsewhere for round two, make your way over to Rodartes Bar on Socorro Rd. for some excellent music and friendly vibes. You have so many choices when you live in San Elizario, so get out and explore your new city!
