It is 31 miles long and 2 - 3 blocks wide and is comprised of 18 distinct communities, each with its own unique character and vibe. Bordered to the north by the Great South Bay and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean, Fire Island's beaches are world famous. It is less than 50 miles from Manhattan to the Bay Shore Ferry terminal, and less from Patchogue Ferries. People come to Fire Island to escape the hustle bustle of New York City in a relaxing setting, without the over crowding of the Hamptons. Walking is the predominant form of transportation, contributing to the Island's intimate, relaxed atmosphere. Residents use wagons to transport luggage, groceries, and other items to and from the ferry terminal, market, or beach. The radio flyer red wagon has become a familiar Fire Island icon. The Island is known for the abundance of wild deer that roam freely. The most popular way to get to Fire Island is via the Fire Island Ferry Service. The Patchogue ferry terminal services Davis Park and Watch Hill. The Long Island Rail Road offers train service from Pennsylvania Station to Bayshore, Patchogue and Sayville. The Fire Island Ferries have three terminals on Long Island, each serving different communities on the island. The Bay Shore terminal services Kismet, Saltaire, Fair Harbor, Dunewood/Atlantique, Ocean Beach, Seaview, Ocean Bay Park, and Point O'Woods. The Sayville ferry terminal services the Fire Island Pines, Cherry Grove, Sunken Forest and Water Island. , Patchogue and Sayville. For schedules and other information, .
