National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released results for Richmond from the second annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 30,000 renters, provides insight into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.
“Renters in Richmond expressed very low satisfaction with their city,” says Andrew Woo, Director of Data Science at Apartment List. “They gave below-average scores across the board.”
Key findings in Richmond include the following:

Families and first-time renters discover surprising value in North and East Richmond, where California bungalows and Spanish revival homes offer architectural character at accessible price points. The neighborhood surrounds Nicholl Park, providing recreation facilities including tennis courts and sports fields within walking distance of most rentals. Most properties include actual yards – a revelation for those transitioning from apartment living – while the grid street pattern simplifies navigation for newcomers. Though some areas show varied maintenance levels, the neighborhood's affordability compared to other Bay Area communities creates compelling opportunities for those prioritizing space over trending locations. The primary advantage remains proximity to BART stations providing car-free commuting to both Berkeley and San Francisco without corresponding rental premiums.
