Unlike most Utah towns, Vernal was not settled by Mormons. In 1861, Brigham Young sent a scouting party to the Uintah Basin and received word back that the area was fit for nothing but nomad purposes, grounds for hunting Indians, and simply to "hold the world together." In the same year, Abraham Lincoln opted to set the area aside as a reservation for the Uintah Indians.
