Union Beach is a small borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The coastline of Union Beach offers views of New York City and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge as well as miles of beaches, aquatic areas and state parks. The area was hit hard by hurricane Sandy but has rebuilt and is now focusing on drawing new residents, developing more rental properties and strengthening its economy. According to the 2010 census, Union Beach had a population of 6,125.
Union Beach has a good deal of available real estate, and it's easy to find a beautiful apartment or condo for rent within walking distance of the beach. Before you decide to make a move, though, use an apartment locator to search available units. You'll find a wide variety of homes, apartments and condominiums on the market. Since most of these are pet-friendly, be sure to bring your critter's paperwork as well. Since Union Beach is situated on the coast, it's important to think about how close to the water you would like your new place to be. Although many rentals are right on the beach, it is certainly possible to find something inland or on the banks of a freshwater creek or river.
Although Union Beach is relatively small, there are several different neighborhoods within city limits. Although most available apartments are within easy walking distance of the beach, some are closer to the downtown area, which boasts fantastic seafood restaurants and old maritime-era buildings. If ocean breezes aren't your thing and you'd like to be inland a bit more, look for something on the West side of town.
Natco Lake: This neighborhood is on the East end of town, set back from both the beach and the downtown area. It is less densely populated than other neighborhoods in Union Beach and allows easy access to the Henry Hudson Trail and, of course, the banks of freshwater Natco Lake. Swim to your heart's content.
City Center: The City Center neighborhood is only blocks from the beach and loaded with historical buildings. Rental homes and apartments are easy to find in this area and living here will give you easy access to bus and train stops as well as Union Beach's many restaurants and stores.
Flat Creek: Renting in this neighborhood means ocean views and many walkable streets. Rental apartments here are in high demand, so make sure you give yourself enough time to find the one you love. House rentals, on the other hand, are more prevalent and generally easier to find.
Union Beach offers a plethora of fun things to do. Since it's right on the ocean, it's easy to head down to one of the many seaside beaches for a day of sunning, swimming and surfing. If you'd rather throw some sliding in the mix, head to the Waterfront Aquatic Park and enjoy the water slide and poolside drinks and dining. Play some baseball or tennis at Scholer Park or take a walk or bike ride along the Henry Hudson Trail. When you've had your fill of that, head to the local Jakeabob's Bay Restaurant, which is widely loved by locals for its homestyle seafood and quirky decor. The place had to rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy and now the walls are covered in doors from rebuilt homes and photos of Union Beach's past and present. You can really get a taste of local history -- and some fried shrimp. Finally, head down to Union Beach's September 11th memorial, a black stone pillar that allows guests to gaze past it to the place on the New York Skyline where the twin towers were once visible.
