National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released Syracuse’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of 111 million American renters nationwide.
"Syracuse renters expressed general dissatisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "Some categories received average scores, and many received below average scores."

Far West Side’s 1980s complexes feature attached garages for rock salt storage and roof shovelers ($50/month Nov-Mar). Green Lakes State Park provides summer kayaking 12 minutes east, but -20°F winters demand stoic Yankees. Practical design over aesthetics—perfect for snowbelt minimalists.
Tired of soulless apartment complexes with paper-thin walls? Eastwood offers a refreshing alternative with its brick duplexes and small apartment buildings from an era when construction quality mattered. The neighborhood functions almost as its own small town within Syracuse, with a walkable commercial district along James Street featuring indie coffee shops and family-owned hardware stores rather than national chains. Most rental homes include basements – perfect for workshop space or additional storage beyond your living areas. Unlike downtown options, street parking remains readily available, with many properties including off-street spots or even garages – particularly valuable during Syracuse's notorious winters when snow removal restricts street options.
Medical professionals choose Washington Square for unbeatable proximity to Syracuse's hospital district without the institutional feel of complex-adjacent housing. The neighborhood's historic row houses often feature unexpected architectural details – bay windows perfect for reading nooks, built-in china cabinets, and transom windows providing natural light while maintaining privacy. Unlike downtown apartments, many units include outdoor spaces from small gardens to covered porches ideal for morning coffee between hospital shifts. The nearby Onondaga Creekwalk offers car-free commuting possibilities and stress-relieving nature walks through former industrial landscapes now returning to green space. When seeking affordable dining, the diverse restaurant scene reflects Syracuse's international student and medical communities with authentic options beyond typical college-town fare.
