    Downtown Syracuse

What's it like to live in Downtown Syracuse?

Downtown Syracuse combines historic architecture with urban revitalization around several universities and hospitals. Apartments occupy converted historic buildings and newer developments with industrial-chic styling and city views. The walkable neighborhood offers restaurants, shops, and cultural venues like the landmark Landmark Theatre, though winter brings serious snow requiring good boots and proper winter gear for navigating the downtown streets.

    Washington Square

What's it like to live in Washington Square?

Medical professionals choose Washington Square for unbeatable proximity to Syracuse's hospital district without the institutional feel of complex-adjacent housing. The neighborhood's historic row houses often feature unexpected architectural details – bay windows perfect for reading nooks, built-in china cabinets, and transom windows providing natural light while maintaining privacy. Unlike downtown apartments, many units include outdoor spaces from small gardens to covered porches ideal for morning coffee between hospital shifts. The nearby Onondaga Creekwalk offers car-free commuting possibilities and stress-relieving nature walks through former industrial landscapes now returning to green space. When seeking affordable dining, the diverse restaurant scene reflects Syracuse's international student and medical communities with authentic options beyond typical college-town fare.

    Eastwood

What's it like to live in Eastwood?

Tired of soulless apartment complexes with paper-thin walls? Eastwood offers a refreshing alternative with its brick duplexes and small apartment buildings from an era when construction quality mattered. The neighborhood functions almost as its own small town within Syracuse, with a walkable commercial district along James Street featuring indie coffee shops and family-owned hardware stores rather than national chains. Most rental homes include basements – perfect for workshop space or additional storage beyond your living areas. Unlike downtown options, street parking remains readily available, with many properties including off-street spots or even garages – particularly valuable during Syracuse's notorious winters when snow removal restricts street options.

Syracuse Renter Confidence Survey

National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states

Here’s how Syracuse ranks on:

Overview of Findings

Apartment List has released Syracuse’s results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. This survey, which drew on responses from over 45,000 renters, provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of 111 million American renters nationwide.

"Syracuse renters expressed general dissatisfaction with the city overall," according to Apartment List. "Some categories received average scores, and many received below average scores."

Key findings in Syracuse include the following:

  • Syracuse renters gave their city an F overall.
  • The highest-rated categories for Syracuse were affordability (B+) and public transit (B).
  • The areas of concern to Syracuse renters are jobs and career opportunities, safety and low crime rate, weather, state and local taxes, social life and pet-friendliness, which all received F grades.
  • Syracuse earned similar scores to other nearby cities like Buffalo (F) and Albany (F), but did relatively poorly compared to New York (C+) and Rochester (B).
  • Syracuse did relatively poorly compared to other cities nationwide, including Boston, MA (A), Washington, DC (A-) and San Francisco, CA (B+).
  • The top rated cities nationwide for renter satisfaction include Scottsdale, AZ, Irvine, CA, Boulder, CO and Ann Arbor, MI. The lowest rated cities include Tallahassee, FL, Stockton, CA, Dayton, OH, Detroit, MI and Newark, NJ.

Renters say:

  • "The winters are intense but it’s a constantly developing city and there are many job opportunities available." – Anon.
  • "I like the diversity but I hate that it isn’t sunny in the winter." – Sasha P.
  • "It’s a love/hate kind of thing. I don’t like that there isn’t much to do here at night, but I like how close everything is and how many restaurants are nearby." – Natasha R.
  • "It’s in the middle of everything. There’s a huge mall, several state parks, and diverse cuisines. Plus it’s in a central location with Boston on one side and Buffalo/Niagara on the other." - Munira
