The first settler in Avon Park was actually a Connecticut man named Oliver Martin Crosby, who moved to the Avon Park area to study wildlife in 1884. People followed him, and eventually, they called their town Lake Forest. Eventually, someone convinced Crosby that the area felt a lot like Stratford-Upon-Avon, so they renamed the city Avon Park. The name stuck, and it's still what we call Avon Park today.
Avon Park is a lovely town located on the Everglades in Florida. It's been home to some pretty notable residents, in addition to its original settler. The town has been home to such people as Hal McRae, an MLB hall-of-famer, Flash Gordon, an MLB pitcher, and Christian historian Conrad Henry Moehlman. The reason the town has been such a draw for so many people is that it's a beautiful, natural place. Located on swampy Florida terrain, people in Avon Park have access to many small lakes, as well as nearby state parks and even the ocean, about an hour away.
