Home to NASCAR greats, The Alabama Gang, Hueytown, AL, was once humming from more than a NASCAR driver's tires. In the early 1990s, there was a mysterious hum -- likely related to a large ventilation fan in an underground mine once in the area. It hasn't been heard since.

Both agriculture and industry formed the backbone of Hueytown, AL: a nice, quaint country town. The Woodward Iron Co. was formed here in 1881 and had a daily capacity of 250,000 tons of iron in 1909. But steel mills are part of the town's history, not its present. The last blast furnace closed in 1973.
