Located only one mile southwest of Madison, Verona could have stayed part of the bigger city. But this small metropolis wanted a better quality of life for its residents. It succeeded, with walkable neighborhoods, one of only 11 scenic trails in the U.S., and its own school district and performing arts scene. Epic, a software tech company, thought enough of Verona to move its HQ there. And an airport and major highways let you go quickly to anywhere else in and outside of Dane County.

Moving to Verona

Located in Dane County in the southern part of Wisconsin, Verona is on U.S. Highway 18. This thoroughfare is the best way to arrive by car because it runs east and west, connecting the city with Madison, Milwaukee, and eventually, Lake Michigan. The nearest airport is Verona Airport. But unless you're a private pilot, you can't land here because this facility serves general and military aviation. If you're flying a commercial airline, the nearest airport is Dane County Regional Airport, which lies about half-an-hour northeast by car.

Neighborhoods of Verona

AreaVibes awarded the city a livability score of 79, which makes the city "extremely livable." High grades go to safety, amenities like shopping and entertainment, housing, and employment. Both of the main neighborhoods offer apartments for rent in Verona.

Northern Verona (City Center): If bright and shiny turns you on, almost half of the construction in this neighborhood happened in the 21st century. You'll find all kinds of rental properties, including apartment complexes, small apartment buildings, townhouses, and single-family homes. This area is also the most affordable part of town. The eastern half boasts the almost continuous green expanses of Badger Prairie County Park, Reddan Soccer Park, Glacier Crossing, and Ice Age Ridge Park. And this being the city center, it contains most of the shopping, with many stores and restaurants lining W. Verona Ave.

Southern Verona (Half Mile Road / West Verona Avenue): Although Southern Verona also contains new developments from this century, about a third of its residences date from 1970 to 1999, with about a quarter before then. Over half of this neighborhood consists of farmland deriving water from the Sugar River and Badger Mill Creek. Many of the city's job-producing employers line the appropriately named Investment Court. But this neighborhood also features its share of parks and lakes.

Living in Verona

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail displays over 1,000 miles of the remains of glacial ice that carved the area over 12,000 years ago. For more natural wonders as well as man-made diversions, you can visit several green spaces like Fireman's Park and Beach, where you can splash outdoors in the summer or fish for bass and bluegill off two piers.

You don't have to confine your activities to warm environs. The Eagles Nest Ice Arena has hockey competitions and leagues for adults and kids. If you'd rather look graceful on the ice, try some learn-to-skate lessons or display your perfect form at the figure-skating contests.

Verona says yes to public safety in a big way with its annual National Night Out Against Crime. This festival offers free hot dogs, ice cream, beverages, face painting, a rock wall, and music to entice citizens to ID their kids for easy recovery by government agencies during emergencies.
