New Market is a sleepy little town in the nooks and crannies of the Shenandoah Mountains. It's a bit of a throwback -- a small town that doesn't change much -- where neighbors have known each other for decades. It still manages to be open and attractive to newcomers, with a certain quaintness that hearkens back to the mid-century.

You'll definitely need a car if you are looking for a rental property in New Market. It's a small town miles from industry and business, and definitely lacking in public transportation, so you won't be able to walk to any of your destinations. At the least, you'll need a bicycle.

Weather

Virginia gets all the seasons, but tends to be on the warmer side -- the winter will see snow but will still be mild. Likewise, summers can get warm but manage not to be stifling.

Lead Time

With limited one-bedroom apartment options and even fewer as far as openings go, you may need to start looking for an apartment for rent months before you intend on moving. Even though there are few openings, there is one plus: these units aren't in high demand due to the remoteness of the town, so you won't be competing with many other applicants.

Neighborhoods

In a town of just over 2,000 people, there are no real neighborhoods in New Market -- you're either in town or you're not. If you're looking for apartment rentals, you'll have to stay in town close to its few shops and amenities. Outside of the downtown area, it's merely houses and housing complexes.

Living in New Market

With so much history behind the town and the area, it's hard to go anywhere in New Market without running into a piece of it. The New Market Battlefield State Park is a big part of the town and draws folks from all around the area and nation. It is the site of yearly reenactments and a huge destination for Civil War buffs. The New Market Historic District, encompassing a handful of buildings in the center of town, includes the Lee-Jackson Hotel.

One of the great draws of New Market is its location in the Shenandoah Valley. It is surrounded by square miles upon square miles of green, fertile mountains begging to be hiked through. There are plenty of outdoor activities year round, including watching local sports teams -- both the Rebels of the Valley Baseball League and the New Market Shockers of the Rockingham County Baseball League call this town their home.

Even with a small population, New Market is still able to support some of the finer things in life. The Schultz Theater and School of Performing Arts puts on performances throughout the year and is considered one of the top performing arts groups in the state.
