Staunton is located in the northern portion of the state, a little over a hundred miles from Richmond. Established in 1747, the city served as the regional capital for what was then known as the Northwest Territory. The city is also the birthplace of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States.
Okay, enough with the historical trivia. What exactly is Staunton like today? Well, as both a small town and home to Mary Baldwin’s women’s college (go Fighting Squirrels!), the city is a mix of rural, small-town folks and educated, cultural types. The American Shakespeare Center is located in Staunton and the downtown area is full of well-preserved Victorian architecture. However, the city has recently undergone a significant population decline and has experienced some crime trouble, but that’s the same story in just about every city in the US, so it’s nothing to worry about.
IStaunton has plenty of shopping, dining and entertainment in its urban shopping areas as well as out around the Staunton Mall. The city also has a pretty decent rental market for a town of its size. Whether you’re looking for studio apartments or large, three-bedroom homes, you should be able to find a great rental in your price range.
Staunton’s city center has a lot of older Victorian rental homes, as well as old homes that have been converted into apartment rentals and duplexes. Mary Baldwin’s campus is located just north of downtown, and you can also find a number of apartments in this area, occasionally with short term lease options. Rents in this highly desirable area vary depending on rental type and size.
South of town, particularly around Betsy Bell Park, there are a handful of apartments, condominiums and townhomes in mixed-use New Urbanist style communities. Many of these complexes also offer amenities, including gyms, pools and clubhouses, and certain developments also have furnished apartments for rent. Further south, around the Staunton Mall, you’ll find less upscale, but still relatively nice, cheap apartments.
We’ve got good news for Fido and Fluffy! Staunton is an incredibly pet friendly town. Some landlords and management companies may require an additional pet deposit, but overall you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a comfortable spot for your four-legged friends!
