Rittman was originally a pioneer town. The first settlers came to the land in the early 1800s and the town went through several name changes before being given its name in 1871. Originally supported by the tobacco, tile-making and mill industries, it became the salt capital of the United States around the turn of the century; in the 21st century, Morton Salt produced its product using Rittman's salt mines. Today Rittman has become an industrial city with almost 6,500 people who are proud to call it home.
