City Guide for Murray, KY

Welcome to Murray! Your new Kentucky home is part college town, part small city, and part rural community. So, let's have a look at the local apartment scene.

Murray is located in the far southwestern part of Kentucky, right on the state border, about 114 miles from Nashville, Tennessee. The biggest attraction around here is the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. This aptly named park is east of town between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake and offers fishing, boating, elk and bison viewing, birding, biking, and camping.

As you might guess, based on population statistics, Murray is a bit of a college town. Murray State University, which educates a little over 10,000 students each year, contributes quite a few folks to the city’s population of 17,000 people. Because of the large student population, there is plenty to do in terms of shopping, dining, and entertainment, particularly for a city of its size. Close to campus you’ll find locally owned restaurants and bars, while farther out into the suburbs you’ll have convenient access to large box stores.

I’ve got great news for the new resident! Murray has a pretty low cost of living and a fairly decent safety record. This means that you should be able to find tons of cheap apartments throughout many of the city’s safe and desirable neighborhoods.

Most of the best and most rental properties will be found just northwest of the city center in the area surrounding Murray State. While this area does have the higher crime statistics associated with a college campus, many of the apartment rentals here are quite safe and offer a variety of amenities, such as a clubhouse and swimming pool. Additionally, you can find everything from studio apartments to three bedrooms to furnished apartments for rent, and many of these rentals also offer short-term lease deals. Two bedrooms here generally range from $450 to $600.

The area south of campus and the city center feels more settled and family-oriented. Though most of the rental properties in this area are owner-occupied, you can occasionally find houses and duplexes for rent. There are also a handful of small, older apartment complexes that offer rentals of varying sizes and quality. Two bedrooms in this area range from $500 to $650.

Good news for pet-lovers! Many of Murray’s best rental properties are both cat and dog friendly. Though some rental homes or campus-area apartments may have breed or size limitations, the city is overall quite pet friendly. Two paws up!

So welcome to Murray! Enjoy all that this small, friendly college town has to offer! See more

What to keep in mind when looking for pet friendly apartments in Murray, KY

Renting pet-friendly apartments in Murray should offer peace of mind and convenience for our furry friends. It’s crucial to find an apartment that’ll work for both you and your pet. Before signing a pet-friendly apartment, take your time to study the layout and ask plenty of questions.

Some pet-friendly apartments in Murray may request a pet deposit or only accept certain dog breeds. You should also consider if the floors are hardwood or carpeted. Hardwood may be easier to clean-up fur and a mess but could mean your neighbors below hear the tapping of your dog running past. An outdoor balcony can also be ideal for a pet who needs some fresh air.

Consider the neighborhood of any pet-friendly apartments in Murray. Are they near a dog park or a vet? You should also research the rates of dog walkers in your area. It may be less expensive to move to a nearby neighborhood with a lower pet deposit, a better layout for your pet, and cheaper services.
