It may have been for only a brief time in 1937, but the great Elizabeth Taylor went to school in Arkansas City and lived in the local area for a short time. All right, so she was only five years old; but who knows, maybe the city is where she first decided she wanted to be an actress?
Set on the southern edge of Kansas, Arkansas City is situated where the Arkansas and Walnut Rivers meet in Cowley County. Two state routes, 77 and 166, travel in all major directions into and out of the city, making commuting to nearby areas for work and play a breeze by car. There are no major urban centers nearby, with Wichita the largest city to the north west, about 40 or so miles away. However, the smaller settlements of Winfield, Wellington, Blackwell, and Ponca City are all easily reachable.
Moving to Arkansas City
Rent is pretty cheap in Arkansas City, so that's one thing to tick off your list of most wanted. Income levels, however, run parallel to rental prices, so don't expect to find a hugely high paying job nearby unless you're willing to commute a hefty distance to Oklahoma City to the south (which is slightly unrealistic!). It's also going to be relatively easy to find somewhere to live for most people, as the vacancy rate in the city is quite high. That said, those searching for rentals homes are most in luck, as the majority of local housing is in the form of, well, houses. There are some apartment buildings, however, so if you've got your eye out for an apartment to rent then you should be able to find something with a little digging. Just don't go expecting to find studio apartments, because you'll be looking for a needle in a haystack!
Neighborhoods in Arkansas City
There are four neighborhoods in Arkansas City and these pretty much divide the main city into four pizza-like slices. In general, each neighborhood is similar to the last, albeit with its own amenities that may or may not be desirable to you. It's also worth noting that the WalkScore for the city is 65, which is neither good nor bad. Most people do tend to drive to work, though, so it's important you get yourself a vehicle of some kind if you don't already have one.
City Center: There are a couple of nice parks in this area -- Carver Park and Paris Park. Great spots for all those picnic and barbecue outings with friends.
S Summit St / E Tyler Ave: The highlight here is Kaw Wildlife Area in the southeast along the banks of the Arkansas River. Well, it's a highlight for nature lovers, anyway.
N Summit St / W Radio Ln: Like golf? Great, then move here because it's close to Spring Hill Golf Course. Probably the best place to find a larger rental property in Arkansas City.
252nd Rd / 41st Rd: This is where you'll find Bulldog Stadium, the site for all local football and track competitions.
Living in Arkansas City
It's warm here, and summers can get pretty humid, but that all adds to the outdoor flavor and the locals' desire to enjoy life outside their four walls. With the river running round the southern edge of the city and with plenty of parks and nature reserves to enjoy and explore, there's no excuse not to get out there and soak up some rays. People generally have a nice tan in Arkansas City!
The city isn't without its dining and drinking options as well, which is great for those with a soft spot for some culinary and alcoholic treats. Brick's Restaurant, Carl's BBQ, and Daisy Mae's Cafe are all found in the center of town, while if you want to explore something different there's always the nearby towns of Winfield and Ponca City.
Thankfully, getting out of town is a breeze with Route 77 going north and south, and Route 166 going east and west. Interstate 35 is also close by to the west, although you're not going to find a transit system running through town, so walking and driving your own vehicle are the only ways of getting from A to B. Or you could go bicycling, of course. Who doesn't like to cycle?
