Located along the Iowa River, this plainly named city is anything but. Iowa translates to “beautiful land” and one look around Iowa City will be enough to convince you that there is much more to this city than flat land and cold winters. The landscape lends itself to hills and woods and the weather offers an amazing four season climate. Iowo City is a town with city appeal.
While it is filled with years of history (it’s the oldest city in the state), there is a exciting feel to Iowa City. Maybe it’s the abundance of culture and activities? Or the city’s ability to constantly revamp itself? Over 60,000 residents live here and love it. Don’t you think it’s time you were one of them?
Neighborhoods:
High-rise apartments share a city street with historic homes (Iowa City has 14 of the country’s most prized Historic Places on the National Register). The neighborhoods here are broken down into east and west (with downtown holding its own). But don’t worry, there aren’t any turf wars here.
Downtown: The proximity to dining and nightlife, shopping at the Pedestrian Mall and all the things that city life offers — tree-lined streets, festivals, concerts, parks, walking tours, theatre — are what draw people to the area. Established and historic homes coexist with hi-rise apartments and luxury condos. Often times, apartment companies will charge a yearly fee for residents to park off street, but snow removal and lawn care is often provided around here, as well as cable.Convenience (bus routes available), walkability and city life are guaranteed.
East/Southeast: Dwellings here consist of medium to large single family homes, townhomes, studios and apartments. Apartment life offers social activities, city bus stops, playgrounds, & controlled access. The east side puts you in proximity to the mall, the aquatic center and the highway.
West Side: The west side has some definite curb appeal. It features a mix of established/historic homes with newer homes and apartments. Minutes from downtown, you feel the excitement of the city but are still set back enough to enjoy cozy living opportunities. It's close to the airport, and there are shuttle services to downtown. Close to the airport and located on the city bus line route, the west side is ideal for commuters and residents. Luxury apartments here feature energy efficient kitchens, all inclusive utilities, gas fireplaces, underground parking, snow removal, etc.
Transportation:
Interstate 80 runs east and west. US 218 (runs north and south) and Highway 27, US 6 and State Highway 1 (both of which take you toward the airport) are also major roads that bypass through the city. Bus systems abound. Remember the roads here often get icy, so suit those wheels up with snow tires before your big move to the Midwest.
For those who rely on the city’s bus lines, Iowa City has an awesome feature called BONGO (Bus on the Go)—a GPS tracking service to let passengers know when and where the bus will be at all times. Perfect for commuters who can’t afford to run late unexpectedly.
Iowa City Idiosyncrasies:
Weather here can be extreme. Winters usually dip below freezing, with highs in the 30s. So if you have always dreamed of making snow angels, make yourself at home. Summers typically aren’t too hot, but when they are warm they are warm. Because this is a Midwest plain state, there can be a dryness in the area. That said, summer months may bring tornadoes, floods and bad storms, so take caution.
The most appealing thing about Iowa City is that it far surpasses expectations. There is nothing boring, common or uncultured about this city. It boasts exciting culture, fabulous shopping (hit up the Pedestrian Mall—or Ped Mall, as the locals say), a strong economy and gorgeous parks.
